Cala Azzurra: the cove in short
Cala Azzurra opens on the south-eastern side of Favignana, not far from Punta Marsala and a short distance from the Cala Rossa area. The name describes the place precisely: a sheltered inlet where shallow water over pale ground takes on a strikingly turquoise tone, framed by calcarenite rock and a small sandy section.
It is one of the busiest coves on the island in high summer, largely because the entry into the water is more gradual than along other rocky stretches of coast. For that reason it is often chosen by families and by anyone who prefers to swim without facing rock ledges or immediate depth. Early in the morning, the low light and smaller crowds make for the best experience.
The setting is the Egadi Islands Marine Protected Area: rules of conduct at sea, mooring and protection zones change over time and should be checked with the Marine Protected Area''s official channels before planning boat trips or diving activities.
Access is from the roads linking the town to the south-eastern side of the island; a bicycle or scooter remains the most practical option, parking in permitted areas and walking the final stretch. There is little natural shade, so an umbrella and water are useful on hot days.
The cove is exposed to southerly and easterly winds, which can make swimming less pleasant; with a northerly wind it is generally better sheltered. As always on Favignana, choosing the right cove depends on the day''s sea and wind conditions.
