Cala del Pozzo: the cove in short

Cala del Pozzo lies on the north-western side of Favignana, along a stretch of coast far less busy than the island''s famous coves. It is a small inlet set into the rock, with a narrow shore and walls closing it on both sides.

The character of the place is typical of the north-west coast: pale stone, very little vegetation, an open horizon and no infrastructure at all. People come here for silence and for a swim away from the crowds, accepting in exchange the complete absence of services, shade and assistance in case of difficulty.

Entry into the water is over rock and requires sure footing and suitable shoes. The seabed is clean and clear on calm days, which makes the cove interesting for swimming and for surface snorkelling along its rocky flanks. This is within the Egadi Islands Marine Protected Area, where access, mooring and diving rules should be checked through the authority''s official channels.

The approach follows the secondary roads of the north-western side, with an unpaved final stretch completed on foot: bring enough water and avoid staying until dark, as the return over uneven ground is awkward without light.

Like the whole northern coast, the cove is directly affected by northerly and westerly winds, which quickly build a swell; the sea is usually calmer when the flow comes from the southern quadrants. Checking the day''s marine conditions is a necessary part of planning.
