Cala Rotonda in Favignana: relaxation, nature and sunset aperitivo

3 min read

Arch of Ulysses and Cala Rotonda bay at sunset, Favignana

Cala Rotonda combines natural beauty with a relaxed atmosphere that wins everyone over. It is famous for the Arch of Ulysses, a natural rock bridge, and for fiery sunsets over the sea: a must on any holiday in Favignana.

A natural bay sheltered from the wind

On the island’s west coast lies a round bay, which gives Cala Rotonda (“Round Cove”) its name. The shore alternates golden sand and pebbles and is washed by water that shifts from deep blue to emerald green.

Its shape protects it from wind and currents. Thanks to its calm and partly shallow seabed, it is also suitable for less confident swimmers and families.

The Arch of Ulysses, symbol of the cove

The Arch of Ulysses is a rock formation shaped over centuries by wind and wave erosion. The arch divides the bay in two: on the left a wider, more accessible beach, on the right secluded coves mostly reached from the sea.

It is one of Favignana’s most photographed sights. For the best shots, go early in the morning or at sunset, when the light reflects off water and rock.

The sunset aperitivo ritual

Leaving Cala Rotonda before sunset would be a shame. The west coast is one of the best places on the island to watch the sky turn pink, orange and red, and in season the area fills with visitors and locals stopping for an aperitivo with a sea view. For evening ideas, browse cocktail bars and nightlife venues or everything in Eat and drink in Favignana.

A paradise for snorkeling

Marine life is abundant and fish come close to the shore: a mask and snorkel are all you need. The rocks around the arch and the coves on the right-hand side are among the most interesting spots for snorkeling.

When to go

Summer is ideal for swimming, while in the low season the bay takes on a wilder feel. To experience all its magic, arrive early in the morning and stay until sunset.

Cala Rotonda is generally sheltered from many winds; conditions are best with north-westerly, northerly, north-easterly, westerly and south-easterly winds. Check the Favignana weather before you go.

What to bring

The cove is fairly isolated, so it is best to come prepared:

  • plenty of water
  • a packed lunch and snacks
  • sun protection and a hat
  • water shoes
  • mask and snorkel
  • a small first-aid kit
  • an umbrella or other shade

How to get to Cala Rotonda

From Trapani you reach Favignana by hydrofoil or ferry: see our guide on how to get to Favignana.

By land

From the village, follow the road towards the southern part of the island in the direction of Punta Sottile, then the signs for the Cala Rotonda area. Leave your vehicle and walk about 200 metres along a short dirt path. By car it takes about 13 minutes, by bike about 17. In season a shuttle bus also runs, with a stop about a kilometre from the beach: all details are on our getting around Favignana page.

By boat

Arriving by sea is the most scenic option: several boat trips include Cala Rotonda in their itinerary. With a rented boat, remember you must anchor offshore and swim to the beach. With a northerly wind the bay also shelters boats that cannot stay at Cala Rossa, so it can get a little busy.

In the surroundings

A little further east is Cala del Preveto, quiet and with two islets offshore. For a day on the north-east coast, head to Cala Rossa. You will find all holiday ideas in our guide to what to see in Favignana.
