Florio Tuna Factory (Ex Stabilimento Florio)

The former Florio tuna processing plant of Favignana and Formica is the most important piece of industrial archaeology on the island. It stands on the harbour front, a short walk from the village, and covers a wide area of tuff sheds, arches, chimneys and processing halls facing the sea.

The complex is linked to the Florio family, who acquired the Egadi tuna traps in the second half of the nineteenth century and turned tuna processing into a large-scale industry, introducing canning in oil. For decades much of the island's economy and social life revolved around the plant: the seasonal work of the mattanza, the crews, the marfaraggio and the boat storage areas.

After production ceased the complex was restored and given a museum and exhibition role: visitors now walk through the processing halls, see the original spaces, the equipment used for tuna fishing and the material telling the story of the tuna trap and of the Florio family.
